Robin Design

When it came to producing some potential designs for the robin, one of the main aspects which needed to be incoorporated was the element of shape. So I carried out some research of different bird designs, in order to get an idea of how a character can be made up of just one or two singular shapes, which then works as the foundation for that characters anatomy.

I knew that the belly of the robin would most likely be quite prominent, but after gathering some different images, I knew it was a matter of sketching out some of my own to get an idea of what would work best.

I did the same thing with the boar design. Emma and I knew from the start that this character would most likely be quite a chubby animal, however it was important to make sure that he didn't end up looking exactly like Pumba from the Lion King! One of the main features that would caused this to be a problem would have been if I designed this character to have a large body but skinny legs. Because of this, it seemed wise to design him as a character who is chubby all around!

It was extremely important for all of these animals to have appeal, so that the purpose of the documentary could be met! So there definitely needed to be something about this character that made it distinctive apart from it's shape, so having an exaggerated snout would add an element of comedy, but would also make the boar seem less intimidating, especially when stood next to the robin.
